Upgrade your Calgary home with resilient roofing and save with the rebate program. Over the years, Alberta has seen some major hail storms, which is why it has been termed the Hail Valley of Canada. Unfortunately, the frequency and severity of these storms have increased every year. According to a study conducted by the Government Of Alberta, hail can reach a speed of up to 100 km/h or more, causing severe damage to homes, properties and cars. Hence, in its attempts to mitigate the effects of hail storms and help the citizens with damages induced by hail, the local government has several rebates in place. The Government Of Alberta is also running the Alberta Hail Suppression Project (AHSP) with the goal of mitigating the amount of hail damage that affects urban property such as homes and vehicles. Another extremely useful rebate program being run is the City Of Calgary Resilient Roofing Rebate. This rebate was initially started to incentivize roof upgrades to help build more resilient neighbourhoods and it became a way to support the homeowners affected by the devastating NE Calgary hail storm of 2020. However, the rebate fund was being depleted faster than expected due to the overwhelming response. Keeping the high number of applications in mind, Calgary’s City Council has approved an additional $3.25M into the rebate fund. This means the rebate program will be able to cater to more people who have been affected by hail or other damage induced by natural calamities. However, to apply for the program, it is important that you fulfil the eligibility criteria. Keep reading to learn more about the rebate program.

What Is The Resilient Roofing Rebate?

This rebate program is available to individuals who are planning to or have already upgraded their roofs to impact-resistant products to protect their homes from severe weather damage. It has been developed to educate homeowners regarding resilient building materials before they are introduced as a regulation. According to Kris Dietrich, Coordinator, Customer Solutions Calgary Building Services, Planning & Development, “This program is designed to bolster the ‘education’ and ‘incentivization’ pillars of the weather resilient building material program, prior to introducing ‘regulation’ through Code changes to standardize the use of impact-resistant roofing materials in our city. Members of our team are working on the change request for the national codes, which includes a mechanism to determine high hazard hail zones. This change request will be submitted for consideration in 2022.” It is a three-year program that has been renewed till May 31, 2024, but if the funds are depleted before the allotted time, the rebate program will halt. Under this program, homeowners will be granted a $3,000 rebate for hail damage. However, they will have to submit an application and only the homeowners whose applications are approved will be eligible. Who Can Apply? As per the City of Calgary’s website, here is a list of homeowners who are eligible to apply for the rebate:

Beginning June 1, 2021

• Homeowners who experienced hail damage in 2020.

Starting June 1, 2021, the rebate program is open to eligible homeowners on a first-come first-serve basis, who experienced damage to the roof of their home from any hailstorm in 2020. Homeowners can apply if their roof replacements occurred after June 13, 2020. Proof of hail damage will be required.

Beginning January 1, 2022

• All eligible homeowners in Calgary

Starting January 1, 2022, the rebate program will open to all homeowners who meet the eligibility criteria and have replaced or plan to replace their roof with Class 4 impact-resistant products after June 1, 2021. Proof of hail damage will not be required.

Beginning June 1, 2023

• New home construction

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria of this rebate program include the following conditions:

• Your property is a single-family, semi-detached or duplex home.
• You are in good standing on your property tax roll.
• You have replaced or plan on replacing your roofing with a Class 4 rated roofing system that meets the impact rating for UL2218 or FM4473.
• You hired a contractor that is a member of the Alberta Allied Roofing Association (AARA) or Alberta Roofing Contractors Association (ARCA) and the roof system was installed in accordance with the City of Calgary requirements.
• You have a receipt and proof of purchase.

Inspection

The application for the rebate requires you to get your roof inspected by an AARA/ARCA contractor if the roofing was not installed by a company or roofer that is an AARA/ARCA member. Note that only an AARA/ARCA approved inspector can inspect your roof. Otherwise, you will not be eligible for the program. In addition to this, know that for semi-detached homes to be eligible, both sides of the roof (two homes) need to have their roof replaced (and inspected, if applicable) with a Class 4 IR product.
